Μελετάται η επίδραση της επικρατούσας κατάστασης καιρού στη χρονική εξέλιξη και τη γεωγραφική κατανομή των έντονων βροχοπτώσεων, ως ένα δυνητικό εργαλείο βελτίωσης των προβλέψεων της βροχής. Για την ανάλυση χρησιμοποιείται ένα σχήμα ταξινόμησης της ατμοσφαιρικής κυκλοφορίας πάνω από την ανατολική Μεσόγειο. Η περιοχή μελέτης είναι η Στερεά Ελλάδα με έκταση περί τα 25000 τετραγωνικά χιλιόμετρα. Χρησιμοποιούνται ημερήσια δεδομένα βροχής από 71 βροχομετρικούς σταθμούς και ωριαία δεδομένα από τρεις βροχογραφικούς σταθμούς της περιοχής για μια περίοδο 20 ετών. Από αυτά τα δεδομένα εξάγονται και αναλύονται όλα τα επεισόδια έντονης βροχής. Διάφορες εμπειρικές και στατιστικές μέθοδοι (καθώς και εργαλεία από ένα σύστημα γεωγραφικής πληροφορίας) χρησιμοποιούνται συνδυασμένα για την ανάλυση και σύγκριση της κατανομής της βροχής στο χρόνο και το χώρο. Η ανάλυση δείχνει ότι η συνεισφορά της γνώσης του τύπου καιρού στην ποσοτική πρόγνωση της σημειακής βροχόπτωσης είναι μικρή σε λεπτή χρονική κλίμακα και μόνο η εκτίμηση της πιθανότητας πραγματοποίησης έντονης βροχόπτωσης είναι εφικτή. Αντίθετα, η συσχέτιση μεταξύ της χωρικής κατανομής της βροχής και του τύπου ατμοσφαιρικής κυκλοφορίας είναι ισχυρή και μπορεί να χρησιμοποιηθεί για τη βελτίωση της πρόγνωσης της γεωγραφικής κατανομής της βροχής.
