Comparison of alternative sources for energy production

As part of this diploma thesis all the alternative sources of energy production are presented, as well as various relevant technologies and production methods commonly applied worldwide. Then, a comparison is being carried out for different sources on efficiency as well as to economic and environmental axis. Specifically, all energy sources and relevant technologies are compared to investment cost and operation and maintenance cost. Concerning the environmental consequences, the different sources and relevant technologies are compared to their affect on the atmosphere, on the water, on the soil and to the scenery. Finally, an application in Greece is being done. The energy coverage of Astypalaia is examined and the cost of energy produced from every source is estimated. In addition, a specific energy mixture is proposed and the relevant cost of produced energy is estimated.
