Τα περισσότερα υδρολογικά μοντέλα, όταν βαθμονομούνται με βάση μια μοναδική παρατηρημένη απόκριση, (π.χ. παροχή ποταμού σε ένα σημείο) οδηγούν σε φτωχή προγνωστική ικανότητα επειδή οι υπόλοιπες μεταβλητές απόκρισης της λεκάνης παραμένουν πρακτικά ανέλεγκτες. Οι σύγχρονες εξελίξεις στη μοντελοποίηση υποδεικνύουν ότι είναι ουσιαστικό να ληφθούν υπόψη πολλαπλά κριτήρια προσαρμογής, τα οποία αντιστοιχούν σε διαφορετικές παρατηρημένες αποκρίσεις ή σε διαφορετικές όψεις της ίδιας απόκρισης. Αυτό μπορεί να επιτευχθεί μέσω εργαλείων πολυστοχικής βαθμονόμησης, τα οποία δίνουν σύνολα λύσεων αντί μιας ολικά βέλτιστης λύσης. Ωστόσο, οι υπάρχουσες μέθοδοι πολυστοχικής βελτιστοποίησης είναι μάλλον ανεπαρκείς σε πραγματικά προβλήματα με πολλά κριτήρια και πολλές μεταβλητές ελέγχου. Στις υδρολογικές εφαρμογές υπάρχουν μερικά επιπρόσθετα ζητήματα, εξαιτίας της αβεβαιότητας στην περιγραφή των πολύπλοκων διεργασιών και των σφαλμάτων μετρήσεων. Η πολυστοχική εξελικτική μέθοδος ανόπτησης-απλόκου εφαρμόζει ένα πρωτότυπο σχήμα που αναπτύχθηκε για τη βελτιστοποίηση τέτοιων προβλημάτων. Τα χαρακτηριστικά και οι δυνατότητές της επεξηγούνται με τη χρήση ενός απαιτητικού προβλήματος εκτίμησης παραμέτρων, το οποίο αναφέρεται στην υδρολογική μοντελοποίηση και διαχείριση νερού μιας καρστικής λεκάνης στην Ελλάδα.
