Investigation of dam overflow conditions. The case study of Mylopotas dam at Ios island

The present thesis examines the single event of the overflow of a dam. It deals with a dam located in Mylopotas, in the Aegean island of Ios, a rock-fill dam with upstream membrane of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), that suffered from an overflow on January 27 2003. The root causes of the event as well as the conditions under which the overflow occurred, are analyzed. From this research, conclusions and recommendations are drawn for addressing similar situations in the future, both for the specific Mylopotas dam as well as for dams in general.
