Η έννοια της πιθανής μέγιστης κατακρήμνισης (ΠΜΚ) βασίζεται στις υποθέσεις ότι (α) υπάρχει ανώτατο φυσικό όριο στο ύψος βροχής που μπορεί να πέσει σε μια δεδομένη γεωγραφική περιοχή μια ορισμένη χρονική περίοδο, και (β) αυτό το όριο μπορεί να εκτιμηθεί με βάση προσδιοριστικές θεωρήσεις. Η πιο αντιπροσωπευτική και διαδεδομένη μέθοδος εκτίμησης της ΠΜΚ είναι η αποκαλούμενη μέθοδος μεγιστοποίησης της υγρασίας. Η μέθοδος μεγιστοποιεί παρατηρημένες καταιγίδες με την παραδοχή ότι η ατμοσφαιρική υγρασία θα αυξανόταν φτάνοντας μια υψηλή τιμή, η οποία θεωρείται ως ανώτατο όριο και εκτιμάται από ιστορικά δείγματα σημείων δρόσου. Στο άρθρο υποστηρίζεται ότι οι θεμελιακές έννοιες τις μεθόδου μπορεί να είναι προβληματικές ή ασυνεπείς. Επιπλέον, αναλύονται ιστορικές χρονοσειρές σημείων δρόσου και "κατασκευασμένες" χρονοσειρές μεγιστοποιημένου ύψους κατακρήμνισης, σύμφωνα με τη μέθοδο μεγιστοποίησης της υγρασίας. Οι αναλύσεις δεν παρέχουν καμιά ένδειξη ύπαρξης ανώτατου ορίου είτε στην ατμοσφαιρική υγρασία, είτε στο μεγιστοποιημένο ύψος κατακρήμνισης. Κατά συνέπεια, υποστηρίζεται ότι η πιθανοτική προσέγγιση είναι συνεπέστερη με τη φυσική πραγματικότητα και ότι παρέχει καλύτερο έδαφος για τη θεμελίωση και εκτίμηση τιμών σχεδιασμού του ύψους κατακρήμνισης.
