Η εξέλιξη της διαχείρισης αστικού νερού στην αρχαία Ελλάδα, που ξεκίνησε στην Κρήτη στην πρώιμη Μινωική περίοδο, οδήγησε σε αξιόλογη πρόοδο τόσο στην ηπειρωτική, όσο και στην νησιωτική Ελλάδα. Στα αξιοσημείωτα επιτεύγματα συγκαταλέγονται η εφαρμογή υγειονομικά προηγμένων προτύπων ζωής, οι προχωρημένες υδραυλικές τεχνολογίες για τη μεταφορά νερού, οι κατασκευές για των έλεγχο των πλημμυρών και της στερεομεταφοράς, καθώς και οι βιώσιμες πρακτικές διαχείρισης νερού, που μπορούν να συγκριθούν με αντίστοιχες σύγχρονες πρακτικές. Η εξέλιξη της διαχείρισης νερού σχετίζεται επίσης με τις κοινωνικο-πολιτικές συνθήκες. Στη διάρκεια των ολιγαρχικών περιόδων, η έμφαση δινόταν στην κατασκευή υδραυλικών έργων μεγάλης κλίμακας, ενώ σε δημοκρατικές περιόδους το σημείο εστίασης της διαχείρισης ήταν οι βιώσιμες πρακτικές μικρής κλίμακας, η ασφάλεια και η οικονομική αποτελεσματικότητα, αλλά και οι θεσμικές ρυθμίσεις σχετικά με τη συμμετοχή του δημόσιου και ιδιωτικού τομέα. Τέτοιες πρακτικές και θεσμικές ρυθμίσεις είναι ουσιώδεις ακόμη και σήμερα, καθώς τα προβλήματα των σύγχρονων κοινωνιών που σχετίζονται με το νερό δεν είναι πολύ διαφορετικά από αυτά στην αρχαιότητα.
