Παρουσιάζονται οι κύριες συνιστώσες ενός συστήματος υποστήριξης αποφάσεων (ΣΥΑ), το οποίο αναπτύχθηκε για την υποστήριξη της διαχείρισης του συστήματος υδατικών πόρων της Αθήνας. Το ΣΥΑ περιλαμβάνει πληροφοριακά συστήματα για την επεξεργασία, διαχείριση και οπτικοποίηση των δεδομένων, καθώς και μοντέλα προσομοίωσης και βελτιστοποίησης του υδροσυστήματος. Τα μοντέλα, στα οποία εστιάζεται η παρούσα εργασία, οργανώνονται σε δύο κύριες συνιστώσες. Η πρώτη συνιστώσα είναι ένας στοχαστικός υδρολογικός προσομοιωτής που, βάσει ανάλυσης της ιστορικής υδρολογικής πληροφορίας, γεννά χρονοσειρές προσομοίωσης και πρόγνωσης των δεδομένων εισόδου του υδροσυστήματος. Η δεύτερη συνιστώσα επιτρέπει την αναλυτική μελέτη του υδροσυστήματος κάτω από εναλλακτικές πολιτικές διαχείρισης, υλοποιώντας τη μεθοδολογία παραμετροποίησης-προσομοίωσης-βελτιστοποίησης. Το μαθηματικό υπόβαθρο αυτής της νέας μεθοδολογίας πραγματοποιεί την κατανομή των υδατικών πόρων στις διαφορετικές συνιστώσες του συστήματος, διατηρώντας μικρό αριθμό μεταβλητών ελέγχου και μειώνοντας έτσι τον υπολογιστικό φόρτο, ακόμη και για σύνθετα υδροσυστήματα όπως το υπό μελέτη. Πολλαπλοί και ανταγωνιστικοί στόχοι και περιορισμοί με διαφορετικές προτεραιότητες μπορούν να οριστούν, οι οποίοι σχετίζονται, μεταξύ άλλων, με την αξιοπιστία και διακινδύνευση, το συνολικό μέσο λειτουργικό κόστος και τη συνολική ασφαλή απόληψη του συστήματος. Το ΣΥΑ βρίσκεται στο τελικό στάδιο της ανάπτυξής του και τα αποτελέσματά του, ορισμένα από τα οποία δίνονται περιληπτικά στο άρθρο, έχουν χρησιμοποιηθεί για την υποστήριξη του σχεδίου διαχείρισης του υδροσυστήματος.
