Η μοντελοποίηση τροποποιημένων λεκανών, οι οποίες δεν μετρώνται επαρκώς, αποτελεί πρόκληση για την υδρολογική επιστήμη. Συχνά, τα μοντέλα για τέτοια συστήματα είναι λεπτομερή και βασίζονται στην υδραυλική ενός μόνο τμήματος του συστήματος, ενώ για τα άλλα τμήματα χρησιμοποιούνται υπεραπλουστευμένα μοντέλα ή αδρομερείς παραδοχές. Τυπικά πρόκειται για μια προσέγγιση του τύπου «από κάτω προς τα πάνω», στην οποία ζητούμενο είναι η εκμετάλλευση της γνώσης των υδρολογικών διεργασιών στη μικροκλίμακα, για ορισμένες μόνο συνιστώσες του συστήματος. Επιπλέον, πρόκειται για μια μονομερή προσέγγιση κατά δύο τρόπους: Πρώτον, ουσιώδεις αλληλεπιδράσεις μεταξύ συνιστωσών του συστήματος ενδέχεται είτε να αναπαρίστανται φτωχά ή ακόμη και να αγνοούνται. Δεύτερον, οι διαφορές στο επίπεδο λεπτομέρειας της αναπαράστασης των διεργασιών μπορεί να οδηγήσει σε μη ελεγχόμενα σφάλματα. Επιπρόσθετα, η διαδικασία βαθμονόμησης θεωρεί μονομερώς την αναπαραγωγή των παρατηρημένων αποκρίσεων, χρησιμοποιώντας τυπικά κριτήρια προσαρμογής. Το άρθρο αποσκοπεί στο να αναδείξει ορισμένα κρίσιμα ζητήματα που αφορούν στη συνολική προσέγγιση μοντελοποίησης τέτοιων υδροσυστημάτων. Για το σκοπό αυτό εξετάζονται δύο εναλλακτικές στρατηγικές μοντελοποίησης, οι οποίες αντανακλούν δύο προσεγγίσεις ή φιλοσοφίες μοντελοποίησης: μια κυρίαρχη προσέγγιση «από κάτω προς τα πάνω», η οποία είναι επίσης μονομερής και πολύ συχνά βασίζεται μόνο στην πληροφορία εξόδου (της λεκάνης), και μια «από πάνω προς τα κάτω» ολιστική προσέγγιση, η οποία βασίζεται σε γενικευμένη πληροφορία. Εξετάζονται κρίσιμες επιλογές, με τις οποίες κωδικοποιούνται οι διαφορές μεταξύ των δύο στρατηγικών: η αναπαράσταση των επιφανειακών, υπόγειων και διαχειριστικών διεργασιών του νερού, οι έννοιες της σχηματοποίησης και παραμετροποίησης, και η μεθοδολογία εκτίμησης των παραμέτρων. Η πρώτη στρατηγική βασίζεται σε αυτόνομα μοντέλα για τις επιφανειακές και υπόγειες διεργασίες και τη διαχείριση του νερού, τα οποία λειτουργούν σειριακά. Για κάθε μοντέλο χρησιμοποιείται διαφορετική παραμετροποίηση (λεπτομερής ή αδρομερής), η οποία υπαγορεύεται από τη σχηματοποίηση του υδροσυστήματος. Η δεύτερη στρατηγική αφορά σε ολοκλήρωση όλων των διεργασιών σε ένα μοντέλο, φειδωλή παραμετροποίηση και υβριδική χειροκίνητη-αυτόματη βελτιστοποίηση των παραμέτρων, με βάση πολλαπλούς στόχους. Η εφαρμογή ελέγχου εξετάζεται σε ένα υδροσύστημα της Ελλάδας με υψηλή πολυπλοκότητα, όπως εκτεταμένες αλληλεπιδράσεις επιφανειακών και υπόγειων νερών, κακώς ορισμένα όρια, απώλειες νερού προς τη θάλασσα, και ανθρωπογενείς επεμβάσεις με μη μετρούμενες απολήψεις από επιφανειακά και υπόγεια νερά. Κριτήρια σύγκρισης είναι η φυσική ερμηνεία των παραμέτρων, η αναπαραγωγή των υδρογραφημάτων σε πολλαπλές θέσεις της λεκάνης, η ευλογοφάνεια των μη ελεγχόμενων εξόδων του μοντέλου, ο απαιτούμενος υπολογιστικός φόρτος και η επίδοση σε συνθήκες στοχαστικής προσομοίωσης. Η εργασία μας επιτρέπει τη διερεύνηση της επιδείνωσης της επίδοσης του μοντέλου σε περιπτώσεις κατά τις οποίες δεν δίνεται ισορροπημένη προσοχή σε όλες τις συνιστώσες των τροποποιημένων υδροσυστημάτων και στη σχετική πληροφορία. Ακόμη, εντοπίζονται πηγές σφαλμάτων και αξιολογούνται οι συνδυαστικές επιπτώσεις τους.
