Προτείνεται μια μεθοδολογία για τη σύζευξη στοχαστικών μοντέλων υδρολογικών διεργασιών, τα οποία εφαρμόζονται σε διαφορετικές χρονικές κλίμακες, έτσι ώστε χρονοσειρές που γεννώνται από τα διαφορετικά μοντέλα να είναι συνεπείς μεταξύ τους. Δεδομένων δύο πολυμεταβλητών χρονοσειρών που έχουν γεννηθεί από δύο διαφορετικά (ασυσχέτιστα) στοχαστικά μοντέλα των ίδιων υδρολογικών διεργασιών, καθένα από τα οποία έχει εφαρμογή σε διαφορετική χρονική κλίμακα, αναπτύσσεται ένας μετασχηματισμός (που αναφέρεται ως μετασχηματισμός σύζευξης), ο οποίος μετατρέπει κατάλληλα τη χρονοσειρά της λεπτότερης χρονικής κλίμακας. Συγκεκριμένα, η μετατροπή γίνεται σε τρόπο ώστε η χρονοσειρά λεπτότερης κλίμακας να γίνει συνεπής με τη χρονοσειρά της αραιότερης κλίμακας, χωρίς αυτό να επηρεάζει τη στοχαστική δομή δεύτερης τάξης της πρώτης. Παράλληλα, ο μετασχηματισμός εγκαθιδρύει τις κατάλληλες συσχετίσεις ανάμεσα στις δύο χρονοσειρές. Ο μετασχηματισμός σύζευξης βασίζεται σε μια γενικευμένη μαθηματική πρόταση που μελετήθηκε, η οποία εξασφαλίζει τη διατήρηση των περιθώριων και από κοινού στατιστικών παραμέτρων δεύτερης τάξης και των γραμμικών σχέσεων μεταξύ των μεταβλητών της λεπτότερης και αραιότερης κλίμακας. Μελετώνται διάφορες ειδικές μορφές του γενικού μετασχηματισμού σύζευξης, από την απλούστερη μιας μεταβλητής μέχρι την πλήρη πολλών μεταβλητών. Επιπλέον, μελετώνται τεχνικές για τον υπολογισμό των παραμέτρων του μετασχηματισμού σύζευξης βάσει των ροπών δεύτερης τάξης της ανέλιξης στη λεπτότερη κλίμακα. Επίσης, προτείνονται δύο μέθοδοι που κάνουν δυνατή τη διατήρηση, πέραν των ροπών δεύτερης τάξης, και της ασυμμετρίας των ανελίξεων. Η όλη μεθοδολογία μπορεί να εφαρμοστεί σε προβλήματα επιμερισμού από ετήσια σε εποχιακή ή από εποχιακή σε ακόμη λεπτότερη κλίμακα, καθώς επίσης και σε προβλήματα που υπεισέρχονται πολύ λεπτές χρονικές κλίμακες (π.χ. ημερήσια ή ωριαία), με τη μόνη προϋπόθεση ότι διατίθεται ένα στοχαστικό μοντέλο για καθεμιά από τις χρονικές κλίμακες που υπεισέρχονται. Η επίδοση της μεθοδολογίας επιδεικνύεται μέσω μιας λεπτομερούς αριθμητικής εφαρμογής.
