Στη διάρκεια της τελευταίας δεκαετίας εκπονήθηκαν πολυπληθείς μελέτες που προβλέπουν το μελλοντικό κλίμα με βάση κλιματικά μοντέλα, τα οποία λειτουργούν σε πλανητική κλίμακα και τροφοδοτούνται με αληθοφανή σενάρια σχετικά με τις ανθρωπογενείς επιδράσεις στο κλίμα. Βασισμένα στα αποτελέσματα των κλιματικών μοντέλων, τα υδρολογικά μοντέλα προσπαθούν να προβλέψουν τη μελλοντική υδρολογική δίαιτα σε τοπικές κλίμακες. Πολύ λιγότερο συστηματική δουλειά έχει γίνει για την εκτίμηση της κλιματικής αβεβαιότητας και για την ένταξη των εξαγομένων των κλιματικών και υδρολογικών μοντέλων σε ένα πλαίσιο αβεβαιότητας. Σε αυτή τη μελέτη, προτείνεται ένα στοχαστικό πλαίσιο για την μελλοντική κλιματική αβεβαιότητα, το οποίο βασίζεται στους ακόλουθους άξονες: (1) το κλίμα δεν είναι σταθερό αλλά μεταβαλλόμενο στο χρόνο και εκφράζεται ως ο μακροπρόθεσμος (π.χ. 30ετής) μέσος όρος των φυσικών διεργασιών, ορισμένων σε λεπτή χρονική κλίμακα, (2) η εξέλιξη του κλίματος περιγράφεται ως μια στοχαστική ανέλιξη, (3) οι παράμετροι της κατανομής της ανέλιξης, περιθώριες και εξαρτησιακές, εκτιμώνται από ένα διαθέσιμο δείγμα με στατιστικές μεθόδους, (4) η κλιματική αβεβαιότητα είναι αποτέλεσμα τουλάχιστον δύο παραγόντων, της κλιματικής μεταβλητότητας και της αβεβαιότητας στην εκτίμηση των παραμέτρων, (5) οι κλιματικές διεργασίες ακολουθούν ομοιοθετική συμπεριφορά, γνωστή επίσης ως εξάρτηση μακράς κλίμακας ή ως φαινόμενο Hurst, και (6) λόγω της εξάρτησης, τα όρια της αβεβαιότητας στο μέλλον επηρεάζονται από τις διαθέσιμες παρατηρήσεις στο παρελθόν. Οι δύο τελευταίοι άξονες διαφέρουν από τις κλασικές στατιστικές θεωρήσεις και παράγουν όρια αβεβαιότητας πολύ ευρύτερα αυτών της κλασικής στατιστικής. Με βάση τους παραπάνω άξονες, αναπτύσσεται ένας συνδυασμός αναλυτικών μεθόδων και μεθόδων Monte Carlo προκειμένου να προσδιοριστούν τα όρια αβεβαιότητας στη μη τετριμμένη ομοιοθετική περίπτωση. Το θεωρητικό πλαίσιο που αναπτύσσεται, εφαρμόζεται πρακτικά με δεδομένα θερμοκρασίας, βροχής και απορροής από μια λεκάνη στον ελλαδικό χώρο, για την οποία οι διαθέσιμες παρατηρήσεις εκτείνονται σε περίπου ένα αιώνα. Στη συνέχεια τα όρια αβεβαιότητας υπερτίθενται σε προσδιοριστικές κλιματικές προβολές μέχρι το 2050, οι οποίες παράγονται από κλιματικά μοντέλα που συνδυάζονται με ένα υδρολογικό μοντέλο της λεκάνης. Οι προβολές αυτές υποδεικνύουν σημαντική μελλοντική αύξηση της θερμοκρασίας, πέρα από τη ζώνη αβεβαιότητας, αλλά καμιά σημαντική μεταβολή στη βροχή και την απορροή, καθώς οι προβλεπόμενες εξελίξεις τοποθετούνται μέσα στα όρια αβεβαιότητας.
