Καταδεικνύεται ότι ένα απλό ντετερμινιστικό μοντέλο σε διακριτό χρόνο μπορεί να αναπαραγάγει την ομοιοθετική συμπεριφορά των υδροκλιματικών διεργασιών σε υπερετήσιες χρονικές κλίμακες, η οποία είναι περισσότερο γνωστή στην υδρολογία ως "φαινόμενο Hurst". Αυτό το μοντέλο-παιχνίδι βασίζεται σε μια γενικευμένη "χαοτική απεικόνιση τέντας", η οποία μπορεί να θεωρηθεί ως το συνδυασμένο αποτέλεσμα ενός θετικού και ενός αρνητικού μηχανισμού ανάδρασης, και περιλαμβάνει δύο βαθμούς ελευθερίας. Το μοντέλο δεν αντιπροσωπεύει με ρεαλιστικό τρόπο το κλιματικό σύστημα, αλλά αποτελεί μια ριζική απλοποίηση της πραγματικής κλιματικής δυναμικής. Η εφαρμογή του μοντέλου παράγει συνθετικές χρονοσειρές που μοιάζουν με τις ιστορικές χρονοσειρές υδροκλιματικών μεταβλητών, όπως της θερμοκρασίας της βροχής και της απορροής. Ιδιαίτερα, οι συνθετικές χρονοσειρές εμφανίζουν ομοιοθετική συμπεριφορά με συντελεστή Hurst μεγαλύτερο από 0.5 και συνάρτηση πυκνότητας παρόμοια με αυτά των παρατηρημένων χρονοσειρών. Επιπλέον, η εφαρμογή δείχνει ότι συνθετικές "κλιματικές" διακυμάνσεις μεγάλης χρονικής κλίμακας (όπως είναι οι ανοδικές και καθοδικές τάσεις) μπορεί να εμφανιστούν χωρίς κανένα ιδιαίτερο λόγο και ότι η εξέλιξή τους είναι απρόβλεπτη, ακόμη και όταν παράγονται από ένα τόσο απλό και πλήρως ντετερμινιστικό μοντέλο με μόνο δύο βαθμούς ελευθερίας. Προφανώς, όμως, το γεγονός ότι ένα τόσο απλό μοντέλο μπορεί να παραγάγει χρονοσειρές που αποτελούν ρεαλιστικά υποκατάστατα των πραγματικών κλιματικών χρονοσειρών δεν σημαίνει ότι το πραγματικό κλιματικό σύστημα στηρίζεται σε τόσο απλή δυναμική.
