Επισκοπούνται οι θεμελιώδεις έννοιες στο πεδίο των συστημάτων νερού-ενέργειας και η ιστορική τους ανάπτυξη, με έμφαση στην πλέον πρόσφατες εξελίξεις. Αρχικά, παρουσιάζεται μια συνοπτική ιστορία της εξάρτησης του νερού και της ενέργειας, και εισάγεται η έννοια του πλέγματος νερού-ενέργειας τον 21ο αιώνα. Η διερεύνηση της σχέσης μεταξύ νερού και ενέργειας δείχνει ότι αυτή περιλαμβάνει και ανταγωνιστικά στοιχεία αλλά και συνέργειες. Η υδροηλεκτρική ενέργεια αναγνωρίζεται ως η μεγαλύτερη βιομηχανία αυτού του πεδίου, και επισημαίνεται ο ρόλος της στην αντιμετώπιση των σύγχρονων ενεργειακών προκλήσεων μέσω της ολοκληρωμένης διαχείρισης του νερού και της ενέργειας. Συνεπώς, επισκοπούνται τα βήματα μοντελοποίησης για τον σχεδιασμό και λειτουργία υδροηλεκτρικών συστημάτων, που ακολουθείται από την ανάλυση της φυσικής θεωρία πίσω από την υδραυλική της ενέργειας. Στο πλαίσιο του σχεδιασμού και διαχείρισης συστημάτων νερού και ενέργειας, παρουσιάζεται επίσης η βασική έννοια της αβεβαιότητας, που χαρακτηρίζει όλους τους τύπους της ανανεώσιμης ενέργειας. Ακολούθως, συζητούνται οι περιβαλλοντικές ανησυχίες και επιπτώσεις της χρήσης νερού για παραγωγή ενέργειας, που ακολουθείται από μια σύνοψη των εξελίξεων στον αναπτυσσόμενο τομέα της θαλάσσιας ενέργειας. Τέλος, παρουσιάζονται οι προκλήσεις και μελλοντικές κατευθύνσεις.
