Στο πρώτο μέρος αυτής της μελέτης, οι θεωρητικές αναλύσεις έδειξαν ότι η κατανομή Gumbel είναι μάλλον απίθανο να ισχύει για ακραία υδρολογικά γεγονότα και ότι η κατανομή ακραίων τιμών τύπου ΙΙ (ΑΤ2) είναι μια συνεπέστερη επιλογή. Με βάση αυτές τις θεωρητικές αναλύσεις, γίνεται εκτενής εμπειρική διερεύνηση χρησιμοποιώντας μια συλλογή από 169 δείγματα βροχοπτώσεων, από τα πιο μακροχρόνια διαθέσιμα παγκοσμίως, που καθένα έχει μέγεθος 100-154 ετών. Η διερεύνηση αυτή επικυρώνει τα θεωρητικά αποτελέσματα. Επιπλέον, δείχνει ότι η παράμετρος σχήματος της κατανομής ΑΤ2 είναι σταθερή για όλες τις γεωγραφικές ζώνες που εξετάστηκαν (Ευρώπη και Βόρεια Αμερική), με τιμή κ = 0.15. Η σταθερότητα της τιμής αυτής απλοποιεί την προσαρμογή και το γενικό μαθηματικό χειρισμό της κατανομής ΑΤ2, που γίνεται τόσο απλός όσο και εκείνος της κατανομής Gumbel.
